Rescuing from the Pound
Thousands of dogs are surrendered to pounds and rescue groups or found wandering and impounded every year throughout numerous pounds nation wide.
Some dogs are fortunate enough to have owners who love them dearly and they go home.
Some dogs are fortunate enough to make it into Rescue and will find a wonderful home.
Whilst there has been an increase in the number of "No Kill" Shelters/Councils, it is, sadly, more common for 'most' dogs to be euthanased at the end of their time in the pound. Under the Companion Animals Act it is required by law to have your dog microchipped. If Impounded, Microchipped animals are held for 14 days, unmicrochipped animals are held for 7 days.
Most of the dogs who are impounded are good natured, affectionate and intelligent animals who have, through no fault of their own, found themselves abandoned by their owners and are facing a lonely, yet humane death. They deserve better than this.
We rescue most of our dogs and pups from Blacktown Pound in the Western Suburbs of Sydney. The staff are an invaluable source of information and assistance when choosing dogs suitable for rescue and re-homing.
The vast majority of impounded dogs may have had a better chance of being picked up by their owners had they done some research into breeds and the typical breed characteristics (even in a crossbred dog). Most of these dogs are devoid of even the most basic training and this too is a reason why so many young adult dogs are abandoned. Basic obedience is essential for all dogs regardless of size or shape! Having a basic knowledge and understanding of the grooming requirements, feeding (amounts etc.) is also essential.

Learning about the grooming requirements of some breeds will prevent this
An initial assessment is done in the pound to decide suitability for rescue. This assessment is mostly based on the animal's Temperament.
I often visit the pound several times a week to help develop a rapport with particular dogs prior to my bringing them into my home for foster care.
Dogs who immediately display aggression of any kind, extreme fear, illness or severe long term medical or psychological problems, sadly, can not taken into consideration for rescue. It is a very sad fact that not all dogs can (or should be) saved. A further indepth assessment is done over a period of days/weeks to decide the needs of the dog/pup and the type of owner/home the dog/pup will be suited to.
There are several places on the "Links Page" where you can start (or continue) your search for a suitable companion (and right here, of course!)
