Orphaned Puppies
Occasionally, I am asked to take on orphaned or abandoned/dumped newborns who need special care during their first few weeks of life. They usually come in via the Pound, but I have taken in numerous litters that are privately surrendered by the owners of Mum.
I usually hand rear between 5-10 litters per year due to varying circumstances. Many litters have been found in boxes at the Pound gates in the early hours of the morning and sadly some are found near death in plastic bags near waterways or left to die in suburban parks and near gutters or bins. Some are also born in the pound and mum rejects them due to her young age or high stress (or dies due to post whelping complications).
This page is to show you what hand rearing entails and one of the reasons so many Rescue people strongly encourage those in the community who are not Registered Breeders to desex their pets (and why we desex ALL Rescue dogs).
A special formula is needed to ensure correct nutrition. I use a product called BIOLAC.
Whenever I am hand rearing a litter, I shall put their pics here so that you can follow their progress. Please note that hand reared pups are often more prone to developing certain bugs (main one being Coccidia) due to the stress of not having mum with them and some pups never receive the vital Colostrum needed to give them Maternal Immunity to disease.
Sadly, please understand that some puppies do die. It is one of the heartbreaking parts of Rescue but we do our best.
Cordelia is completely in her element and is doing what she does best.... taking care of 'her' babies.
