Before & After
Some dogs are abandoned in the pound in dreadful condition. Filthy, matted, emaciated and in pain, either physically or emotionally........ or both.
Some are surrendered in frightful condition by their owners who merely want to be rid of the family pet (which, in reality has never been treated as one of the family).
This page is dedicated to the filthy, neglected, sad and abandoned to show the huge difference a bath, some good food and a lot of patience and love can do for a dog.
GRANDMA KATE:
Surrendered into Rescue under very suspicious circumstances in Januray 2004. 4 other Cavaliers and 2 Papillons were also surrendered at this time..... all from a Registered Breeder in Victoria.
Grandma Kate is 8yrs old and was kept by a puppy farmer. She was used for many years to help line the pockets of this person. I suspect that once it became apparent that Katie could produce no more, she was "dumped" along with the other 'unsaleable' dogs.

Katie in June much happier |
Grandma Kate has had numerous medical problems since her arrival, but things have settled down considerably. She still has recurrent ear infections and sadly, she does have a very enlarged liver which causes her to feel unwell at times. She still loves nothing more than eating but is now on a very strict diet to ensure she stays healthy with our family for as long as possible.
OLIVER:
Oliver was a part of the rescue with Katie. He was the youngest of the Cavaliers and by far the least socialised. He was terrified of everything and had rarely been touched by human hands on arrival.
It took a couple of months to really see the improvement in his confidence, especially around new people. (See Rediscovering Play).

GRACE:
Aged 10yrs, Gracie was the oldest in the group rescued in January. She was a bedraggled mess, had lost so much of her coat and was emaciated and had urine stains covering her back end.
Thankfully, Grace's original breeder found us and was devastated that one of her babies had ended up being used as a breeding machine.
Grace is now back with her original mum and is a very happy, very healthy and very much loved little girl.

PIPPY:
Pippy was abandoned in the pound in a frightful state. She was so matted she couldn't walk and had great difficulty eating and drinking. She was terrified, in pain and had burns on her rear end from her coat being permenantly soaked in urine.
What attracted me to her in the first place though was her eyes. She had a look of one who still had some hope left. Just a small spark, but it was there.

Pippy when she was impounded
Pippy didn't know what grass was, she wasn't used to anyone being able to touch her skin so she was hyper sensitive and would stiffen and shake when touched for weeks after being in care.
Once she realised the world wasn't so worrisome for her, she started to come out of her shell and showed herself to be an amazingly loving, forgiving and adorable little girl.
Pippy has just recently had her 1 year Adoption Anniversary and she is vastly different girl now. She is confident and extremely happy with her wonderful family who saw the same hopeful spark in Pippys eyes that I did. Her best friends are 2 lovely girls who love Pippy very much.

Several weeks after Pippys Rescue
ATTICUS:
Abandoned in the pound by his former owner, he was a matted mess and malnourished.
He is a registered, pedigreed Standard Poodle and sad proof that even uncommon purebreeds find themselves unwanted, neglected and finally abandoned.

Atticus half way through grooming |
He was adopted several weeks after his rescue by a wonderful woman who saw a familiarity in Atticus to her own lovely Poodle girl. After some investigations, it turned out that her 2 gorgeous dogs are in fact closely related!
Atticus is now a deeply loved fellow and has made great progress with some left over worries.
As you can see.... he's a spunk and looking every bit as regal as his breed should!
