Thinking about Adopting?

Adoption Info

Before you decide to adopt a dog, have you considered:

1) A Canine Companion is a lifetime commitment. We seek out forever homes for dogs so they never have to find themselves in a pound or shelter again.

2) Dogs are pack animals and require ample time with their human pack. Most dogs are not suited to spending their entire lives outside and are likely to display behavioural problems if forced to do so.

3) Dogs need exercise to keep them fit, healthy & happy. Do you have the time and commitment to do so?

4) Dogs need ongoing training & socialisation. Are you able to attend your local obedience club on a regular basis?

5) Not all breeds/cross-breeds will be suitable for your lifestyle or environment. Please don't be offended if we say so. We reccomend you meet dogs that have similar energy levels to yourself and other dogs in your home. The appearance of the dog alone is not an indicator of the dogs personality, behaviour & abilities. We may recommend dogs that are suitable to your environment that you may not have initially considered.

6) Researching the breed that you are interested in.

7) Taking your time to do your research and prepare your home.

8) Puppy or Adult, there are differences that you should consider.

9) Grooming - if you adopt a dog that requires professional grooming, is this a financially viable option for you and do you know how to maintain the coat inbetween visits?

10) Expectations of the dog: Are they realistic? Is the dog you're considering suitable for what you're looking for?

11) Other animals in your home - some dogs aren't suitable around small animals or live stock, what measures will you put in place to ensure all animals stay safe.

12) Fencing: Suitable fencing to keep your dog in and other dogs out.

13) Future vet fees: If the worst was to happen, will you be prepared financially or have considered Pet Insurance?

14) Having human babies: Will this effect the time that is spent with the dog, if so, how much?

15) Dogs will do things that upset you, are you ready for this?

16) Training Methods: Are the training methods you are familiar with ones that have been handed down and are perhaps now out of date? Have you researched new training methods that will get the best out of your dog in a more positive manner?

17) If the dog develops a behavioural problem, are you prepared to seek out the assistance of a Qualified & Accredited Behaviourist?

Adult Dogs have an average Adoption Fee of $300.00.  This is a donation to cover the costs of Desexing, Vaccination, Microchipping, Worming, Flea Treatment and Heartworm Prevention that are incurred by our Rescue. Your adoption donation pays the Vet clinic who does our work, food bills, buys beds, bowls etc when needed. (see sponsorship page for a breakdown of costs for 1 dog in care). Some purebred dogs have an increased adoption fee.

Pups have an average Adoption Fee of $320.00. Usual vet work is the same as it is for Adults with the addition of a compulsory treatment (once off) to prevent the development of Coccidiosis (a potentially life treatening parasite common in 'pound puppies' due to stress. This consists of a small dose of Baycox the day after arrival into care. (The old adage "Prevention is better than Cure").  Since implimenting this new regime, the number of pups who become ill within a few days of rescue has decreased by over 50%.

Some pups may have a higher adoption fee if they are purebred (very unusual in rescue) or require additional vaccinations.

Dogs over 8yrs of age are available for a reduced fee of $200.00  for Aged Pension Card holders only . (Pension card must be viewed prior to Adoption).

DESEXING IS NON-NEGOTIABLE.
